The State University of New Jersey: National Title Contenders?
Rutgers is 9-0. They just won the most important game in Rutgers history since, well, the first collegiate football game ever. Only West Virginia is They’re one big win away from being screwed out of a national title appearance. Screwed because no matter how deserving Rutgers may be, there is no way they’ll be as highly regarded as a one loss Florida, USC or Notre Dame. That’s a damn shame.
This brings up the essential problem with college football. On what are the rankings based? Are they supposed to represent the teams who have had they best season or the team who is more likely to win on a neutral field? There appears to be no actual guidelines for the voting process. This was fine in the days when the poll was simply for the post-season, but now the polls help determine who has a shot at the national championship. I’m of the mind that the college football polls should reward the best season, not necessarily the most talented team. Rutgers beating all their opponents is more impressive than even Auburn beating all but one of theirs, at least to me it is.
More likely than not, Rutgers, as deserving as they might be, will not be in the national championship. (Or, they’ll lose to West Virginia, and this whole thing would be moot.)
But for right now, denizens of the Garden State can take solace that their team could still end up playing in the national championship. The dream has never been alive so late.
