The Odd Hypocrisy of the Iditarod
You can push them out of a plane, you can march them off a cliff, you can send them off to die on some God-forsaken rock, but for some reason you can’t slap them.
- Grandpa Simpson from “Bart the General”
Grandpa Simpson was talking about Bart’s legion of 10-year-old “soldiers,” but apparently the same rule applies to Iditarod sled-dogs. In the still-going-on Iditarod — the winner finished on Tuesday! — musher Ramy Brooks has been disqualified from this year’s race for striking his dogs with a stake when they refused to run.
An animal rights group was upset about the incident because it came when the dogs did not want to run.
“I’m sure they’re exhausted and sick of the whole thing,” said Lisa Wathne, a spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
“When is enough going to be enough with this event? There is no way to do this humanely. No one who has any feelings for dogs should condone this event, or could possibly think it’s acceptable.”
Now, I hate PETA as much as the next man. (I could definitely go for some veal right about now.) At least PETA is against this all the way. That animal rights group that is only pissed because the dogs didn’t want to run sort of confuses me. Shouldn’t animal rights groups be against hitting dogs, you know, for any reason? Oh well, at least this guy got disqualified for hitting his dog, that’s got to be a step in the direction those hippies want. Next they should probably do something about the three dogs that died this year from running for miles in the goddamn tundra. I guess at least no one hit them.
MUSH!
