The Hangover (All Yanks-Sox Edition)
Yankees 8, Red Sox 5 (1O Innings) - Papelbon blows a 2 run lead, Rivera gets out of a bases-loaded jam, Craig Hansen gets roughed up in the top of the 10th, Rivera gets the save in the bottom half. That probably should have been expected. The “Clutchest Hitter in the History in the World” even got two plate-appearances in the the last two innings, contributing to exactly zero runs. (I’m still in disbelief that at the mere sight of Ortiz at the plate the umpires didn’t reward the Red Sox the win.)

But for me, the difference between the Yankees and the Red Sox cannot be found in the late inning heroics/collpases. The main difference was demonstrated in the opening inning. Curt Schilling pitched a perfect first with two strike-outs, Mike Mussina was roughed up for 4 hits and 2 runs. The three Yankees batters who failed to reach base saw 22 pitches, the six Sox who scored two runs saw 14. Even when the Yanks aren’t hitting, they’re making the opposing pitcher work. The Yanks are getting to relief pitching more quickly and they are then rocking those weak souls who cannot start. (Yeah, you Papelbon.)
