The Black Rhino Drew Blood
In the most compelling event from last night’s All-Star events, Charles Barkley defeated veteran NBA referee Dick Bavetta in a foot race. The race came about because Barkley claimed back in January, while doing color commentary on a TNT game, that he could beat the 67-year-old Bavetta in a foot race. Bavetta heard about this and said let’s put some money on this knowing Barkley can’t turn down a bet like he can’t turn down a jelly doughnout.
The Black Rhino (Barkley) as his personal trainer, 1968 Olympic Bronze Medalist John Carlos, dubbed him won the 3.5 length race after several false starts on Barkley’s part (you know, if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying). At the end Barkley started showing up Bavetta by backpedaling towards the finish line but Bavetta started to catch up. The Rhino fell backwards across finish and Bavetta made a valiant try to steal the victory with headfirst dive. Alas, it wasn’t to be. Barkley had his victory and the Las Vegas Boys and Girls Club and two Barkley sized blackjack hands ($50,000) in its bank account.
As the interviews commenced, it was apparent that Bavetta had injured himself. Blood gushed from his right knee and trickled down towards his pulled up tube socks. He didn’t even notice the battle scar. And, it was revealed later that, in a move that certainly would put Tim Hardaway at ease, that Barkley and Bavetta shared an intimate kiss after the race (picture here at Deadspin.com).
With a little sleuthing it appears that is not the first time Bavetta has kissed an NBA player. The picture can’t be found yet but the search will continue.
