NBA Upsets: Of Braids and Beards

The NBA playoffs are apparently going to get exciting earlier than planned. This is a surprise. I was perfectly content to sit back and wait for the Mavs, Suns, Spurs clusterfuck of contention, but this — this is something completely different. The Mavericks, team of 67 wins, fell to former Mav coach Don Nelson and the fantastically bearded Baron Davis and the rest of the Warriors. Not completely surprising, as the Warriors swept the Mavericks in the regular season. But that was the regular season and this was the playoffs. The playoffs. The playoffs, where the San Antonio Spurs usually decide to quit screwing around and start out-fundamentalling anyone in their path. And how do you counter such fundamentals? Shooting the lights out. Melo and AI just decided to score as much as they could, which is, you know, a lot. It’s just game one, it’s just the first round, but attention is going to have to be paid a little bit earlier than usual and playoff beards might become a little more vogue: two things that aren’t so bad
