EPL Saturday: Boot to the Head

by The Fan's Attic on December 16th, 2006

Charlton 0 v. Liverpool 3:  After a disastrous start to the season on the road, Liverpool has won two consecutive away from Anfield.  Xabi Alonso netted an early penalty after Jermaine Pennant received a boot to the head.  A stubborn Charlton held on until the final ten when Pennant and Steven Gerrard scored to put the game away.  The victory allowed the Reds to leapfrog Arsenal and Portsmouth for third place.

Arsenal 2 v. Portsmouth 2:  A heroic effort by Portsmouth keeper, David James, helped Pompey come away with 1 point.  James saved several great shots by the Gunners.

Newcastle 2 v. Watford 1:  Former Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins, has continued his good play with two goals to lead Newcastle to victory.

Reading 1 v. Blackburn 2:  In a match-up of two American keepers, the Rovers’ Brad Friedel came away victorious against Marcus Hahnemann and Reading who held the first half lead.  However, second half strikes by David Bentley and Benedict McCarthy gave Blackburn three points.

Wigan 0 v. Sheffield United 1:  In a battle of unexciting mid-table teams, Robert Hulse’s first-half injury time led the blades to victory and continued its climb from the relegation zone.

Aston Villa 0 v. Bolton 1: A second half Gary Speed penalty kick gave Bolton the victory.
