EPL Saturday

by The Fan's Attic on September 23rd, 2006

Arsenal 3 – Sheffield 0:  Arsenal finally won in its new stadium and appears to be rounding the corner towards a quality season.  Thierry Henry knocked one home late in the match and caused a Sheffield own goal on a hard shot earlier.

Liverpool 3 – Tottenham 0:  Another preseason favorite, Liverpool, finally looks to be in form with two consecutive wins after a disappointing loss to Chelsea last week.  Dirk Kuyt, the new Dutch striker, scored one goal and appears to be fitting in well with the Reds to the detriment of Peter “The Robot” Crouch.  Mark Gonzalez and John Arne Riise scored the other two.

Reading 1 – Manchester United 1:  Premiership newcomer Reading continues to show its worthiness with a draw against the Red Devils.  Irish striker Kevin Doyle capitalized from the spot on a controversial penalty call against ManU.  Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer as the rest of the United squad failed to take advantage of many opportunities including superstar Wayne Rooney.  Reading is in 6th place, even with Liverpool at 10 points in the table.

Fulham 0 – Chelsea 2:  The Blues won away from home on a Frank Lampard brace.   Lampard exorcised his PK demons by converting in the second half and then scoring off of a Didier Drogba assist.  Chelsea moved atop the table with the ManU draw but still awaiting the Portsmouth match tomorrow which could put Portsmouth in first.

Aston Villa 2 – Charlton 0: Villa sits in fourth place and Charlton looks to be heading towards relegation.

Man City 2 – West Ham 0: The shady deal bringing Tevez and Mascherano to the Hammers has failed to produce for West Ham yet.

Middlesbrough 0 – Blackburn 1:  Brad Friedel continues his strong season for the Rovers with another clean sheet.

Wigan 1 – Watford 1:  There was a game and it was a draw.
