25 Years Ago, Idiots and Stadiums Converged in a Perfect Storm to Create: “The Wave.”
And ever since then, you’ve had to sit by those insufferable fans who are constantly trying to start one during the game. “Come one guys…let’s start the wave.” I’ve had my own personal battles with the wave, as I have Michigan football season tickets. Michigan stadium has the dubious distinction of being home to the largest recorded wave. The self-important Michigan Daily even takes some time from being a preachy political rag to discuss the best times to start the wave. At orientation students are taught the special order of wave varieties that constitute the Michigan wave. It’s sickening, and part of Michigan’s tradition of the quietest 110,000 fans ever. (Another tradition, those goddamn keys.) But the wave is a scourge on the entire nation, not just Michigan Stadium. And we have some guy from San Jose to thank for it. At least all those idiots who bring gloves to baseball games have something to do now while waiting for foul balls to come into the stands.
Really, there’s nothing worse than the wave, except maybe those people who constantly complain about the wave. They’re no fun.
