You Know What, Screw Asterisks

Don Shula took a break from restauranteuring and glory-basking to announce that he’s an old, bitter man. He wants the impending Patriots undefeated season to have an asterisk.

“The Spygate thing has diminished what they’ve accomplished. You would hate to have that attached to your accomplishments. They’ve got it,” Shula told the Daily News yesterday. “Belichick was fined $500,000, the team was fined $250,00 and they lost a first-round draft choice. That tells you the seriousness or significance of what they found.

“I guess you got the same thing as putting an asterisk by Barry Bonds’ home run record. I guess it will be noted that the Patriots were fined and a No.1 draft choice was taken away during that year of accomplishment.”

Seriously, this might be the only thing that could get people who pronounce r’s to root for the Patriots. I was not in the mood for Belichick’s Death March to the Superbowl, but if he takes down Shula’s champagne sipping crew, that might be worth it. Last night many of the ’70s Steelers were at the game as part of the all-time Steeler team. The ’70s Steelers were a lot better than those ‘72 Dolphins, they won twice as many Super Bowls that decade. The Steelers have remained like-able, despite the fact that they include one of the actors from Failure to Launch. Perhaps the reason they’re not hated is that they aren’t the personification of schadenfreude. When you pop open champagne every year to celebrate other’s losing, you tend to look like a dick. When you go on television and try to steal the thunder of a highly anticipated regular season game, you tend to look like a glory-hogging dick.

“You guys put forth the myth that we are pathetic losers down here clicking champagne glasses and clinging desperately to a record set 35 years ago,” [Dolphins TE Jim]Mandich said yesterday. “Somehow we’ve been portrayed as being evil. We don’t ever blow our own horn. It’s a great record, but the record doesn’t get beaten. “

When you say something like that, you tend to look like an oblivious, glory-hogging dick.
