Cheater vs. Cheaters, Pumpkins Expected To Be Eaten
I, for one, am not at all surprised that Bill Belichick would cross a line to win. This is the man who barely dresses himself because he is so concentrated on winning. He’s Bill Belichick, he wins. Is it really shocking that he would try and steal signals? This whole thing reminds me of the time Mike Shanahan “forgot” to take the Bronco’s blue jerseys to Oakland in an especially hot early season matchup. The home Raiders were supposed to have their choice of jersey, but were forced to wear their black unis in the heat. The Broncos were fined, and everyone moved on. Belichick has apologized, the Patriots will probably lose some draft picks, but it doesn’t appear like the scandal is going away any time soon.
Even players are commenting on the scandal. LaDainian Tomlinson, no fan of the Patriots, had this to say,
“I think the Patriots actually live by the saying, ‘If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.’ They live off that statement. Nothing surprises me really. You keep hearing the different stories about stuff that they do.”
The usually quiet LDT previously disparaged the Pats and Belichick after the Chargers were eliminated from the playoffs last season. He called them classless after they mocked Shawne Merriman’s “lights out” dance at midfield.
All this uproar is quite odd, because this is the NFL. In the NFL, if you get caught cheating, you’re punished, and you move on. Such was the case with LDT’s teammate Shawne Merriman. In case you’ve forgotten (and it certainly appears Nike has,) “Lights Out” was suspended for 4 games last year for a violation of the NFL’s steroids policy. He used the ol’ tainted supplement defense, served his suspension, and went to the Pro Bowl. So, yeah, the Chargers aren’t really in any position to label anyone as “cheaters” so long as they continue to gainfully employ Mr. Merriman.
So, I’d like to take this opportunity to once again remind everyone that once we all accept that professional athletes (and coaches) will do anything they can get away with (and some things they don’t get away with) to win, the happier we’ll be. So, when the Patriots play the Chargers this weekend, don’t worry that one team is coached by a cheater while the other team is led defensively by a cheater. Just enjoy a game played by two teams that are exceptionally good at football.
