The Yankees Have Made a Huge Mistake
I thought these were different Yankees. The Yankees who weren’t willing to overpay for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees who wouldn’t trade Ian Kennedy, Phillip Hughes or Joba Chamberlain for aging vets, not even for Miguel Cabrera. I thought these were going to be the Yankees with foresight beyond the next year. And then this: Jorge Posada has been signed to a 4-year, $52 million contract. Well, fine, Jorge is coming off a career year. He may very well be worth $13 mil next year. If he has another season like 2007, he’d definitely be worth it. The problem with the contract isn’t next year; the problem is 2011. In 2011, Jorge Posada will be 39 years old. Of Baseball-Reference’s 10 most similar players, only 2 played after they were 35. Even if he turns out like Carlton Fisk — his most comparable player — and remains a viable batter for the next four years, it is highly unlikely that he can remain an effective defensive catcher. And so, the Yankees will then have 3 or 4 designated hitters each making millions upon millions of dollars.
They’ve made a huge mistake.

Good point. Wouldn’t now be a good time to start grooming a new catcher, especially since there are a lot of up and coming pitchers on the staff?
