Joe Torre, Going Out On His Terms
Joe Torre turned down an incentive-based, one-year pay cut from the Yankees yesterday. Good for him. It was a fairly insulting offer, even though he would stay the highest-paid manager in baseball. It basically insinuated that he wasn’t trying before. Steinbrenner has pretty much treated him like crap the last 6 years, so it’s good to see he got a good “F you” in before he left. (Much like Zimmer did before him.)
I would like to believe the meeting went something like this: (NSFW Language)
Couldn’t you just picture Old Stein telling Torre that he was still “Waiting on that World Series ring?” And there’s no way Cashman didn’t give Torre a thumbs up.
