Huzzah! For I Hit A Meaningless Homer!

Now, technically, for the game, that home-run was meaningless. It didn’t even make it a save situation. Perhaps it may be significant that it was the first back-to-back-to-back home-run in ALCS history, but I doubt that Manny realized that. Truly, it was far from meaningless, though. In the large scope of things, it may very well mark the moment at which the Red Sox became more hated than the Yankees. This day has been coming for a while, it has been slowly building and building. Curt Schilling has contributed heartily. ESPN has helped make the Sox hated as well, but like most soulless corporations they’ve contributed to both sides. But mostly this is the responsibility of Red Sox nation. They even elected douche-bag-in-chief recently. (Congrats Jerry Remy!)

But Manny’s self-appreciation may have been the tipping point. It exemplified the Red Sox mentality: self-important gloating in any and all situations, especially ones where it’s grossly inappropriate.

So yeah, the homer might not have kept the Sox from going down 3-1 n the series, but Manny hit it. And he hit it far. So he watched it. Not completely unexpected, since it wasn’t just Manny being Manny, it was Manny being a member of Red Sox nation.
